Requirements to Study in New Zealand

When applying at any university, you must meet the following minimum requirements to study in New Zealand:


New Zealand Student Visa

A study visa is a legal document that permits you to study, and work in the nation for a specific amount of time (usually for the duration of your study program). You need to spend ~INR 16K in application costs to apply for a study visa.

Proof of English Proficiency

One of the main requirements to study in New Zealand as an Indian student is confirmation of English proficiency. While the TOEFL or PTE tests are equally popular, the IELTS exam is recommended. Acceptance to a Most New Zealand institutions will need you to score an IELTS score of 6-6.5 at least to get an admission offer.

Proof of Funds

Other major requirement to study in New Zealand is a proof that you have sufficient fund to support your studies and living expenditure while in New Zealand. The following are acceptable forms of evidence of funds for New Zealand:

  • Education Loan sanction letter from nationalised or multi nationalised bank.

  • Latest bank account statements for the past 6 months (Statements should not be more than 1 week old at the time of lodgement of application.)

  • Fixed deposits copy and balance certificate from bank

  • PPF/ PF/ GPF withdrawable amount

  • National saving certificates


Statement of Purpose

An SOP is a very important document that can make or break your application. It is usually required only for Master's and PG Diploma courses only. A strong SOP can help your admission chances significantly even if your overall CV might not be that strong. Therefore, it should be drafted with utmost care and rigour. In your SOP, you should definitely cover the following points:

  • Why you want to study at the university in question

  • Why you have selected New Zealand as the destination of your choice

  • Why you want to study this specific program and how will this program add value to your professional life

  • What your future plans are after completing the program

SOP is also used by the university to judge your ability to write and express yourself in English.


Academic Documents

To showcase your past academic record, you will also need to provide duly attested passing certificates and mark sheets of Class 10th and Class 12th. Please note that if the 10th or 12th mark sheets contain only the subject codes, subject key should be provided as well.


For students applying to a Master's / PG program in New Zealand, you will need to provide duly attested degree/provisional/completion certificate and all the mark sheets of Bachelor's degree / diploma too.


Letters of Recommendation

If you are applying to a Master's program or PG Diploma, you might need to submit two or more LORs as per the requirements of the university/ college that you are applying to.


Work Experience Certificate

A work experience certificate should be submitted if the candidate has work experience for a holistic review of your profile.


Resume / CV

Especially for Master's programs or PG Diplomas one should consider submitting a Resume as it can give a complete picture of your academic as well as professional profile with a quick glance.


Copy of Passport

One of the first and foremost things when it comes to applying to universities / colleges abroad is that you should have your passport ready with appropriate validity. You need to submit a colored copy of the first and last page of your Passport along with your application.
