Online preparation for IELTS - is it worth it?

Education in any form is valuable. If you are willing to study, no matter what the platform is, you’ll receive it well. When talking about online versus offline education - the syllabus or the books don't change; the only thing that changes is the mode of teaching. In offline classes, you go to a physical place like an Academy or a Coaching Centre, but in online classes, you can learn from anywhere!

A lot of people are cynical on the value that online classes can give. Simply saying that they're not worth it as you may not be able to fully concentrate in online classes, etc., without even trying is surely not justifiable.

Definitely, there are some subjects that need you to be physically in a place or get physical attention / supervision like performing complex or dangerous scientific experiments (which require you to wear the recommended safety equipment and use the equipment available in the laboratory) or Sports. Subjects like these, no doubt, should be practiced in the recommended conditions and at a place that they are meant to be practiced at. For instance, you cannot learn to swim sitting on your couch and watching online videos on how to swim. You will actually have to go to a pool and go into the water to actually start your swimming lessons. But, higher education or preparation for standardised tests like IELTS do not come under this category. All you need is proper trainer guidance, good practice material and a will to ace your IELTS score and you can prepare for the exam from anywhere, whether it be online or offline.

Especially in this pandemic situation, when lockdowns have been imposed and the world is not operating as usual, do you want to wait to fulfil your dreams to move abroad just because the physical centres keep opening and closing? No ways! We recommend that you give online training for IELTS a chance. A lot of training academies, tuition classes, schools, colleges, etc., have maneuvered to virtual classes.

Still not convinced? Let’s examine this in more detail.

Are online classes really helpful for IELTS?

Let's have a look at a few important points to evaluate the answer.

  • Suppose this lockdown situation persists, how are you going to study for your next IELTS exam? Answer: Online! So, why wait? Start now. Book your free demo now.

  • In case you're planning to take a computer-based IELTS exam, online classes will give you a chance to become comfortable with the computer interface and practice different types of questions online to get ready for the D-Day. Giving your mock tests online will help you get friendly with the computer interface and will also make you quick around the tool.

  • Not to mention, IELTS online coaching will save you lots of time that you would have used to travel to your centre daily. You can now use this time to study more for your IELTS exam!

Looking at the above points surely does convince one to go for online IELTS classes, especially at this time. But as there are two sides to each coin, there sure must be pros and cons for IELTS online practice. As we've had a look at the pros of the IELTS online course, let's have a look at the cons of it now.

Why should one avoid IELTS preparation online?

The only instance when one should avoid taking IELTS training online is when the teacher is not very experienced or qualified. He/she should also be well versed with the online platform being used to teach as that will make the teacher more productive in terms of teaching and the students in terms of learning. What are the other things that you should take note of before joining an IELTS training online?

Other things to consider before joining online preparation for IELTS:

  • The teacher should have excellent teaching skills with relevant experience in the field.

  • You should feel comfortable with the trainer’s teaching style and be able to understand most of whatever they are teaching you.

  • You should be able to connect well with the teacher.

  • Regular mock tests should be conducted to get familiar with the exam-like environment.

  • Your tutors should give you regular feedback, which will help you improve.

  • Your academy/trainer should provide you with practice material.

Now, what all should you take care of while taking up IELTS preparation online?

  • Clarify your doubts with your teacher as and when required and as soon as possible.

  • You should totally dedicate yourself to studying what you're taught and practice it regularly besides attending classes.

If you think that you have an excellent command over the English Language and that you don't need any tutor or external help, then, we would recommend you to still join a crash course or some regular class as it will help you to be regular with your preparation and become acquainted with the IELTS format and types of questions seen in the test. Moreover, even if you don't need a tutor for studying, you should at least take up some mock tests with an experienced trainer to gauge your current level and identify any gaps in your preparation.
